Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is art licensing?
You can think of Art Licensing like renting, where you (the licensee) obtain permission to use artwork from an artist or designer (the licensor) on your products for a specified period. As the licensee, you pay a fee to the licensor for the rights to use their creative work, under the terms and conditions agreed upon in the license agreement. These rights can range from reproducing the artwork on physical goods to using it in digital formats or even modifying it, depending on what's agreed. This arrangement not only compensates the artist but also allows your products to benefit from their unique and professional artwork, creating a mutually beneficial relationship.
  • Do I need a license to sell things that I have made from fabric I buy on Spoonflower or other retailers?
No, you do not need a license to sell items that you have crafted from fabric purchased on Spoonflower or from other retailers. I encourage you to creatively use the fabric you've bought to make and sell your own products! A license is only required if you intend to reproduce my designs directly onto products yourself. Fabrics bought from Spoonflower or similar platforms are typically intended for both personal and commercial use, which is why no additional license is needed for their use in creating and selling products.
  • What is a non-exclusive license?
Purchasing a non-exclusive license grants you the rights to use one of my existing designs for manufacturing and selling finished goods within a single product category of your choice. It's important to note that as this is a non-exclusive arrangement, other companies may also license the same design for use within the same category. Furthermore, the design will remain available on platforms like Spoonflower, allowing others to purchase the design printed on various products. This type of license is non-exclusive, meaning the design will not be unique to your business, which is a vital consideration for your branding and marketing strategies. Typically, non-exclusive licenses are more affordable than exclusive ones and have specified durations with options for renewal. This affordability and flexibility make non-exclusive licenses particularly appealing to smaller businesses or those looking to test market response to new designs with a lower financial commitment.
  • What is an exclusive license?
Securing an exclusive license grants you the sole rights to use one of my designs within a specific product category of your choosing, ensuring that during the license period, no other company can use the design within the same category. This exclusivity allows you to differentiate your products in the marketplace significantly. However, it's important to note that while you hold exclusive rights within your chosen category, I, as the designer, retain the flexibility to use the design for any purposes outside of those explicitly restricted by our licensing agreement. For example, if you've secured an exclusive license for the design in Children’s Apparel, I may still license it out for use in completely different categories such as Stationery or Wallpaper, or use it for my promotional purposes, ensuring the design's value is maximized across various markets. If you're looking for a design that is entirely exclusive to your brand across all categories and platforms, custom work might be the right solution for you. In such cases, we would enter into an agreement where I, as the designer, would not retain the rights to use or market the design on Spoonflower or any other platforms, giving you complete exclusivity. This level of exclusivity involves a different approach, including a custom pricing structure and process, tailored to meet your unique needs and ensure the design is exclusively yours in every sense. At the end of the license term, you will be offered the first chance to renew the exclusive license. This ensures that you can continue enjoying the benefits of exclusivity if the design has proven successful for your products. Should you decide not to renew, the exclusive rights revert back to me, allowing the design to be made available for new licensing opportunities. This process ensures both the continuity of your product line and the ongoing use of the design in the marketplace.
  • How much does a license cost?
Every client has different needs, so it's important to have customized pricing. When preparing a quote, I take into account several factors to figure out the price for a license. Please fill out the form below to send me a licensing inquiry. This lets you give me the key information I need to create a personalized quote for you.
  • Who owns the copyright to the design?
As the designer, I maintain full copyright and ownership of the artwork, along with all derivative works, at all times. Currently, I do not offer buy-outs.
  • Can you change the colours on your designs?
It depends on the pattern. Lots of my patterns are painted by hand and then digitized in Photoshop and it can be challenging to change colours. Where I can, I am open to making changes. Contact me and let’s chat about it…
  • Can you resize patterns?
Yes, I am able to do that.
  • Do you do custom work?
I’m open to discussion regarding custom work. Please fill in the form and let’s chat about it.
  • What is the turnaround time for licensing agreements and custom work?
The time it takes to finalize a licensing agreement or complete custom work varies depending on the complexity of the project and my current workload. For licensing inquiries, I strive to respond with a personalized quote within 7 days of receiving your form submission. For custom work, the timeline can range from two weeks to several months depending on the project's specifics. I recommend getting in touch early to discuss your needs and timelines.
